Insight - Q3 2024 Investment Highlights: Guatemala

1. Increased M&A Activity: Increased optimism in international markets, as a result of various factors, including a recent reduction in U.S. interest rates by the Federal Reserve, has led to heightened M&A activity in Guatemala. Investors in the region, coupled with an increasing optimism in the international economy, are driving this surge in M&A activity. Sellers are seeking opportunities to divest amid favorable market conditions, while investors actively pursue attractive acquisition targets. This environment has created a range of acquisition prospects across sectors, with both companies and investors reassessing their portfolios and seizing strategic opportunities for growth.

2. Energy Market Opportunities: The energy sector remains central for investors, with anticipation continuing to build around Guatemala’s forthcoming PEG-5 power bid. Elevated spot energy prices, along with the nation’s focus on renewable technologies, have attracted substantial domestic and international investments. This period has seen a strong inflow of capital directed toward energy projects, especially in renewable sectors like solar power. For investors, Guatemala’s energy landscape presents solid growth opportunities, with heightened demand expected for power purchase agreements starting from 2030 onwards, reflecting a long-term commitment to sustainability and energy security.

3. Development and Construction Opportunities: Guatemala’s construction and development sectors continue to thrive, fueled by increasing demand in both residential and commercial real estate. Activity spans both metropolitan and rural areas, with developers keen to secure capital to meet anticipated needs in the short to mid-term. This steady pace in construction highlights strong confidence in residential and commercial development, positioning these sectors as essential contributors to the country’s growth trajectory.

4. Evolving Local Capital Markets: As Guatemala’s capital markets continue to evolve, developers and investors are turning toward alternatives to traditional bank financing. This shift has benefitted infrastructure projects, providing expanded access to capital through innovative financing solutions. Local investors are becoming increasingly familiar with diverse investment options, enhancing Guatemala’s regional appeal and unlocking new funding sources for large-scale projects.

5. Nearshoring Prospects: Nearshoring remains an attractive proposition for Guatemala, drawing interest from both domestic and international investors. With its strategic location and close proximity to North American markets, Guatemala has bolstered its reputation as a nearshoring hub, particularly in industrial park development. Throughout the year, the country has also seen increased interest in projects aligned with North American supply chains, positioning Guatemala as a prime destination for manufacturing and distribution investments.

6. Increased Activity by Family Offices: Family office investment activity has been on the rise in Guatemala, with many family-managed corporations diversifying portfolios, exploring alternative investment opportunities, and seeking new ways to access capital. This heightened interest includes both direct investments and sophisticated financial products, contributing to an increasingly dynamic investment landscape. Family offices are actively pursuing fresh avenues for capital allocation, positioning themselves as key sources of funding and expertise within the regional market.
